    The Dakotas Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church and The Foundation for Evangelism presented the 2016 Harry Denman Evangelism Award to Helen Vogt from Aberdeen North Highland UMC at the 23rd session of the Dakotas Annual Conference on June 9. "Helen would be the least likely to call herself an evangelist, yet the core of her life, actions and responses are centered in genuinely living out and sharing the good news to, and for all, in word and in action," said Pastor Lou Whitmer.

    Today, interest rates of 300 percent to more than 600 percent are common here. Last year, the Sioux Falls Business Journal reported 56 payday/title loan shops just in Sioux Falls area. South Dakotans for Responsible Lending is a bi-partisan coalition that seeks to cap payday, car title, and installment loans at an annual interest rate of 36%. Members of the 23rd session of the Dakotas Annual Conference passed a resolution to become a partner and support the efforts of South Dakotans for Responsible Lending.

    Tess Oplinger, Jaedyn Oplinger and Carol Johnson, three teens from Olivet UMC, dreamed and reinstated vacation bible school in their small, rural community of 74. The three brought VBS to 53 children last July. They are the Harry Denman Award winners for youth and young adults for the Dakotas Conference.

    Bishop Bruce R. Ough, resident bishop, Dakotas-Minnesota Area, was presented an honorary doctorate of divinity from Dakota Wesleyan University at the 23rd session of the Dakotas Annual Conference, Friday June 10, in Sioux Falls, SD. “We are fortunate to have such a faithful community servant on our board of trustees,” said DWU President Amy Novak.

    Annual Conference never lacks for opinions from those who attend. But what did the youngest delegates at Annual Conference—those from the Millennial Generation—think of the proceedings? “It’s kind of overwhelming,” admitted Natalie Hilton, a youth delegate from Piedmont Grace UMC. “But it’s also nice to see so many people together, and to get a lot of perspectives. It’s also fun to watch pastors interacting with each other.”

    The 2017 budget was approved at the twenty-third session of the Dakotas Annual Conference in Sioux Falls, South Dakota June 9-11, 2016. The 2017 budget amount of $4,361,252 was approved at a slight decrease of -0.05% compared to the 2016 budget total $4,365,000. Other legislative items approved include: a resolution to join as a coalition partner with South Dakotans for Responsible Lending, the selection of the site for Annual Conference for 2017-2020, rule changes that allow for changes in ministry teams Camp and Retreat Ministry and the election of lay leadership and conference officers.
