Conference Leadership

Common Table, Extended Cabinet, Annual Conference Sessions Committee, NW District Committee on Ordained Ministry (DCOM)

My name is Kermit Culver, and I'm excited to be the District Superintendent of the North West District of the Dakotas Annual Conference.  Here's a bit about me.

I was born and raised on a farm in eastern SD, attended Dakota Wesleyan University and Asbury Theological Seminary.  I've been a pastor for 35 years in Stickney, SD; Rapid City First UMC; DWU as campus minister/professor/coach; and for the past 20 years the Sr. Pastor of Legacy UMC in Bismarck.

I have been married to Susan for 40 years.  She is a middle school art teacher in Bismarck, and we have 2 grown sons who live in Nashville.  Susan is an artist, musician, seamstress, and lover of foreign books/films, and documentaries.  Adam is a Radio Host/DJ, and Jordan a nurse, both of which support their passion for music - they are in a band called The Future.

I have come to love ND these past 20 years, and have spent considerable time exercising some of my passions in the natural beauty of our state; hunting, mountain biking, and playing golf.  I look forward to discovering some new trails, hunting sloughs and golf courses in my travels around our district.

My life verse is:  "For I have been crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live, yet not I but Christ lives in me.  And the life I now live, I live by faith in the Son of God who loves me, and gave his life for me."  Gal. 2:20. This verse simply reminds me it is not about me.  All that I am, and all that I have are by the grace of God, and all the good I may have accomplished is because of Christ living in me.

Some years ago I spent some intentional time working a process to determine my personal mission statement which is: "empowering people to authentically know God."  It is my hope and prayer that I might be able to continue with this mission in our district.  I don't know enough about the job yet to make any promises beyond the pledge to encourage and support the pastors and churches in Sakakawea to faithfully advance the Gospel, and intentionally enhance the Kingdom of God.

I have too many weird quirks to name just one, but being part "owner"/operator of a butcher shop might be pretty weird.  I make knives as a hobby.  I have many unusual things in my desk drawer, including - 3 pairs of 'cheater' glasses I no longer use, but can't seem to part with, a Swiss Army knife letter opener, a Culver's Restaurant coffee mug (I don't drink coffee), and 4 keys which have no known lock.
