"Do-Know-Be" a model for discipleship

By: Rev. Ben Ingebretson, director of new church development, Dakotas-Minnesota Area UMC

The mission of The United Methodist Church is to "make disciples for the transformation of the world (Matthew 28:18-19)." Rev. Ben Ingebretson presents the"Know-Be-Do" model of discipleship as a tool as we engage in the mission of the church.  Ingebretson uses the image of a tree. The leaves are the fruit representing "Do."  The acts of mercy, justice and kindness that are part of mission, service and volunteering. The branches signify "know." We seek to know God through small groups, Bible study, learning experiences and events. The roots of the tree represent are core values, beliefs and virtues that are the foundation of our spiritual lives.
