John 12:1-8:The betrayal (and the cross) foreshadowed

This week, we compare Judas Iscariot’s betrayal of Jesus with Joseph of Arimathea’s show of unexpected loyalty after Jesus’ death. We begin with a glimpse of Judas’ heart. John said Mary showed extravagant love for Jesus, and Jesus was grateful for it. But Judas coldly condemned the gift, and did so, John said, for corrupt reasons. Mark told a very similar story in Mark 14:1-9, and followed it immediately by writing about Judas agreeing to betray Jesus.

  • Imagine the depth of love and gratitude that led Mary to give Jesus her extravagant gift. What does Jesus’ response tell you about how much her fervent love meant to him as he faced death? What are one or two ways you might emulate Mary’s beautiful spontaneity and urgency, and show your love for Jesus, both inwardly and outwardly?

  • Judas’ criticism was outwardly credible: “Why wasn’t [this perfume] sold and the money given to the poor?” Jesus, knowing the insincerity and lack of concern for the poor that lay behind it, said simply, “Leave her alone.” Are you ever tempted to criticize the way someone else praises or serves God? How can this story help you to value
