Matthew 28:16-20 The ultimate assignment for all God’s people

Our study of work, as God designed and assigns it, moves back and forth from the personal and particular to the divine and the global. As members of God’s diverse, far-flung family, each of us makes a unique personal contribution to the work of carrying out God’s mission—no one else can do exactly what we do in exactly the way we do it. And yet, as Jesus laid it out for his disciples, the overarching mission, God’s divine commission that directs all of the work we do, is clear. We are, all of us in our unique ways, to make disciples.

  • Imagine you are one of eleven disciples (or even 120—cf. Acts 1:15), and Jesus told you to go make disciples of all people. Pretty overwhelming? Yes—except, scholar William Barclay noted, for Jesus’ promise: “They were sent out—as we are—on the greatest task in history, but with them there was the greatest presence in the world.” What helps you to remember, and live into, Jesus’ promise that “I myself will be with you every day”? In what ways are you letting Christ’s love for non-religious and nominally religious people in your unique setting shine through you? How can Jesus’ presence with you help you to love others naturally and winningly?
