On Sunday, April 19th, many United Methodist congregations will celebrate Native American Ministries Sunday. Native American Ministries Sunday is one of six churchwide Special Sundays designated to support ministries and causes important to the entire United Methodist Church. On this day, we come together to honor and support Indigenous peoples and communities. It’s a day to recognize the rich gifts, cultures, and contributions of Native Americans to both society and the Church. Special Sundays give us a chance to focus our prayers and support on important ministries all year long—uniting our gifts to multiply our impact. Your generosity strengthens Native leadership and sustains ministry across the connection.
Resource UMC has created a variety of resources to help promote Native American Ministries Sunday in your church. You can find them here.
In addition to ministries that are happening in communities across North and South Dakota with our Indigenous siblings, the Dakotas Conference has two flagship Native American mission ministries: Spirit Lake Ministry Center in North Dakota and Tree of Life on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. Recently, you can check out some of the exciting things happening at Spirit Lake in their recent annual report below.
You can also find a Tree of Life update here.
We are grateful for the ways United Methodists across the Dakotas are celebrating and supporting the beauty and diversity of the Body of Christ through Native American ministries.
