Stepping Forward with Faith in Zap

Zap, N.D.  – Zap, N.D. is one square mile from one edge of the city limits to the other edge.  It is a community that is known for the only official riot in North Dakota where the National Guard was called in to disperse the crowd.

On May 10, 1969, Zap had a concert.  It was called the "Zap In” and people from all over the United States "Zipped to Zap".  Housing is reasonably priced compared to neighboring communities in the middle of the oil patch.

The Beulah / Hazen United Methodist Church conducts a food pantry.
A gentleman from Zap, who comes to the food pantry in conducted by Beulah / Hazen UMC shared that there roof leaked and that his wife who has difficulty walking stairs.  He was in need of having a ramp installed to the entrance of their house in Zap, N.D.

Listening to the need one person stepped forward and began recruiting volunteers and organizing people to do the project.

The Beulah /Hazel United Methodist Church outreach team wanted to shingle a house for the couple to stop it from leaking in. The materials for this project were estimated at $3,000 by the local lumberyard.  The cost was out of reach creating a problem getting this project done.

Rev. Steve Behrens was having coffee one morning and noticed an advertisement placed on the local Internet classifieds (offered free by local phone company) for materials.   Someone was offering more than enough shingles, felt paper and roof edge to do the job for only $400 through the online classified. The materials were used for a project three years ago but were still in new condition.

Rev. Steve Behrens, Beulah / Hazen UMC explained, “Why does the way God works still amaze me? God worked the whole thing out before we knew we had the need, we just had to be willing to take the first step.”

The project will be completed this week before the snow flies.  A handicap accessible ramp has been built, painted ant donated by a member of the church.  The roof will be repaired and shingled this week by volunteers from the church.

Beulah / Hazen is a small church with a big heart.  Average attendance ranges from 45-60 people on a Sunday.  This summer a group gathered to paint a house for a woman who could not afford to get the job done.

“The outreach to others has been a spark from God.  These projects are truly God speaking to us,” noted Rev. Behrens.
