This is a picture of Lloyd (on the right), and his daughter Lisa, and her husband Chad. It was taken after a potluck at McCabe UMC last year.

Eighty-one-year-old Bismarck, North Dakota, resident Lloyd Liken has been missing since November 16, and law enforcement and volunteers have been searching for him since. McCabe United Methodist Church has turned part of its fellowship hall into a command post of sorts.

Rev. Karl Kroger, senior pastor at McCabe UMC, said Liken is a congregation member, and turning part of the fellowship hall into a command post is only logical.

"It's the right thing to do. A space was needed for people to come together, and we have it," Kroger said. "The church shouldn't be used just on Sunday."

Lloyd is a long-time, beloved member of McCabe United Methodist Church. He attended worship each week. At Midweek @ McCabe, Lloyd has been a mainstay in the kitchen--helping on Wednesday nights, the Banquet, and other functions.

Lloyd was last seen at the home of one of the McCabe UMC members attending a small group gathering—dinner and devotions.

"I was at the dinner and devotions group," said Rev. Lou Whitmer, associate pastor at McCabe UMC. "Lloyd talked to people before the dinner. When the whole group was there, he was quieter, but he was fine. He left, and everybody checked to see if he knew his way home, and he did."

Lisa Liken Monroe, Lloyd's daughter, and son-in-law, Chad Monroe, reported to police that Lloyd was missing on Saturday, November 18. Chad and Lisa are members at McCabe UMC.

The volunteer search effort has included family members, residents across the region, the Badlands Search and Rescue Service, and the Civil Air Patrol.

Inside the fellowship hall, large maps indicate areas already searched and places yet to be searched. A public Facebook group, Looking for Lloyd Liken, has more than 3,000 members. It provides updates and is filled with comments of support for Liken's family.

Sonja Murray, who works at Gate City Bank with Lisa (Liken) Monroe, is the Facebook page administrator and a volunteer search coordinator. Murray has been working with Badlands Search and Rescue Service and the Civil Air Patrol at McCabe UMC.

Murray posted this list of frequently asked questions on the Facebook page.

  1. Why can't a Silver Alert be issued? A medical diagnosis (Alzheimer's, dementia, etc) is required to issue this alert, and Lloyd does not have a diagnosis. However, a Red Alert was sent out by local law enforcement on Monday, November 20.
  2. Can you track his spending and bank accounts to see where he has been? Does he have a phone you can track? No, he does not have a debit card, and Lisa has been monitoring his credit card account daily. There have not been any transactions since he went missing on the evening of Nov.16. Lloyd does not have a cell phone.
  3. Can you track his vehicle with Onstar? No, his vehicle is not equipped with this service and can't be activated.
  4. What has been done so far? Extensive aerial searches by Civil Air Patrol and private plane owners, along with a coordinated ground search. The only 100% confirmed sighting of Lloyd was on November 17 at 1:29 a.m. by the McLean County Sheriff's office between Washburn and Wilton on Highway 83, mile marker 119, heading south, the central area of focus has been the Hwy 83 corridor north of Bismarck. We have also extensively searched Bismarck and Mandan residential and commercial locations.

Despite the extensive efforts and briefing meetings held each day in the morning and early evening with the latest updates and details, Lloyd Liken and his vehicle remain missing. Chad and Lisa Monroe are returning to work. Search efforts by Badlands Search and Rescue were scaled back. McCabe UMC is coordinating the search efforts.

A Badlands Search and Rescue Service leader shared this about their experience at McCabe UMC. "I have never witnessed a church step forward in a way that this church has. It is truly heartwarming."
