  • Connecting across the globe: Rebecca's Random Thoughts

    Monday, April 17, 2017 | Rebecca's Random Thoughts
A few weeks ago, Steve and I had the opportunity to journey to the other side of the globe. I (Rebecca) am a member the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) and this spring we held our board meeting in conjunction with the 25th anniversary celebration of Africa University (AU). Africa University was founded by the United Methodist Church 25 years ago in the country of Zimbabwe. It is a Pan-African Institution designed to reach students from across the continent, provide them with quality education as well as strong United Methodist values and ethics, in order to positively impact the continent of Africa and the entire world. The experience was phenomenal and we learned and observed many things.
  • Journey Renewal: A road trip to new beginnings

    Monday, January 9, 2017 | Rebecca's Random Thoughts
Journey Renewal is comprised of a flight of churches each year that have been recommended by the cabinet and are ready to start a new lifecycle in their ministry. The revitalization process is a 2-3-year journey. The journey is underway for nine churches: Arthur, Burke, Herrick, Mandan, North Sioux City The Ark, Presho, Kennebec, Reliance and Wahpeton Evergreen. Rev. Rebecca Trefz, director of ministries, describes the first nine months of the "road trip."

  • Rebecca's Random thoughts: Seven Things I’ve observed/learned about myself in the first week of General Conference

    Monday, May 16, 2016 | Rebecca's Random Thoughts, GC 2016
As I sit here in the comfortable familiarity of a Starbucks at the halfway point of the 2016 General Conference, my mind and heart feel like they are swirling around. The past week has been an emotional and spiritual roller coaster. At points I felt so grateful that I was given the privilege to be here and that we have an awesome church that is truly transforming the world. Then the roller coaster would come crashing down and I wanted to bag it all and join the circus! So I thought maybe trying to get some of these thoughts on paper (computer) might help me keep from sending my resume to the Shriners. So here are the Seven Things I’ve observed/learned about myself in the first week of General Conference:
  • Rebecca's Random thoughts: Vulnerability hangover

    Thursday, February 4, 2016 | Rebecca's Random Thoughts
I had an interesting epiphany recently. I used to wonder why I was so exhausted on Sunday afternoons when I was a pastor. I mean I am an extrovert so being around people all morning energized me. I don't think it was the early morning thing. Although I did enjoy summers when church didn't start until 9:45. What I think it was for me was a “vulnerability hangover.”
  • Rebecca's Random Thoughts: Taking steps in faith

    Monday, February 2, 2015 | Rebecca's Random Thoughts
How often do we pay more attention to our comfort zone than to the desperate need someone has to connect with another person even for just a brief time? I may be an extrovert but my default, in large gatherings, is to find people I know to sit with or visit with. When I find myself in a large group setting or even at the end of the potluck line, it’s as if I revert back to junior high—scanning the room for someone I know rather than SEEING the people God wants me to get to know.
  • Keeping connected to God

    Monday, January 12, 2015 | Rebecca's Random Thoughts
A year and a half ago, Sue Nilson Kibbey was the teacher/speaker at Annual Conference. Her words about prayer coupled with her recommendation of “The Circle Maker” by Mark Batterson led to a season of renewed passion for prayer in my personal life as well as a time of leading the church in a breakthrough prayer initiative over the course of the following year. I remember it feeling like a cold drink of water after a long desert season and an opening of my eyes to all Christ could do.
  • Rebecca's Random Thoughts: A Season of the Unexpected

    Monday, December 1, 2014 | Rebecca's Random Thoughts
Rev. Rebecca Trefz, Director of Ministries shares how Advent is not about the expected but the unexpected in her latest blog. "We always talk about Advent as being a time of expectancy. Yet, when you think about the Christmas story, it was more of a season of the UNexpected. Mary and Joseph certainly didn’t expect to be parents before they were married—let alone parents of God’s son. A bunch of average shepherds were in no way expecting a visit from a choir of angels as they sat in the field that night."
  • Unknown Territory-- Random thoughts from Rebecca

Uftda! The packing continues. Just when you think you’ve made huge headway, it seems as if the remaining pieces start breeding. It seems that the “transitional emotions” tend to ebb and flow as well. What will the new place be like? Will we make friends? Will we like our new neighbors? Will the work be stressful?
